Latest Happenings in and around the neighborhood

Brookwood Alliance

July 15, 2008

Here is the latest edition of Brooknotes, the newsletter of the Brookwood Hills Community Center. It had information about the Brookwood Alliance, a rather informal collection of the neighborhood associations running along both sides of Peachtree between Brookwood Station and Peachtree Battle. We fall right into the center of this, so we should keep up with it.

Trail Plan Unveiled April 7

Please Send Comments

I wanted to follow-up with you concerning the trail plans unveiled by the Path Foundation on April 7th. For those of you that attended the walk and/or the meeting that evening thank you for your participation. I have attached a PDF file of the plan to this email for your review. There is also a 2nd PDF file that shows the path continuing through the Bitsy Grant tennis center to Northside Drive.

Final Meetings on Tanyard Creek Trail

March 13, 2008

The design for the trail connecting Bobby Jones and Tanyard Creek Park (official name is "Atlanta Memorial Trail") is going to be finalized by June 2. There are three important meetings which represent, probably, the last chance for your input. Speak now or forever hold your peace!

Details are on the "Parks & Trails" page and are also posted on the Calendar and Forums.

Tony Casadonte on Cathedral Woods

March 11, 2008

Tony Casadonte has written an enormous and comprehensive article about the five-acre tract that runs behind the cul-de-sac: Cathedral Woods — Neighbors, Nature and the New Reality of the Beltline. Known as 'Cathedral Woods', this land provides a corridor connecting Bobby Jones to Tanyard Creek Park on the west side of Tanyard Creek.

This land is on the western boudary of CH North and is literally in the back yard of many residents. I'm sure there will be different points of view on some proposals. If you want to discuss them, I'd point you towards the Forum.

Traffic Calming News

I've put two emails from Christy and the proposal on a separate Traffic page.

About Collier Hills

Historic Close-in Neighborhood

Collier Hills comprises a neighborhood straddling Collier Road, between
collier mill
Peachtree Street and Northside Drive, in Atlanta. Our section on the north side of Collier Road is called — not surprisingly — "Collier Hills North". We are surrounded on three sides by Peachtree Memorial Park, named in memory of the Battle of Atlanta, which is one of Atlanta's largest parks and includes a golf course, a major tennis center, a playground, a large dog park, and extensive woods, fields and streams.

Update on Website Progress

Since the last post, I've added a lot of features and functions to the Members' Area (click on "Members" at the bottom of the page to go there). It starts with a login and registration feature. Once you register, you will have access to the Members Area, which contains a neighborhood directory and a page that will let you add or edit your personal directory information, including whether and how it is displayed. The area is heavily safeguarded against intrusion and hacking -- nobody but people in North Collier Hills will have access to it.

So if you feel adventurous, please go ahead and register. You have to have your browser set to "cookies allowed" to use it, for the time being. (There is a way to allow only specific sites to set cookies -- I'll have an explanation of how to do this on the Help page soon.) There are probably a few bugs to work out and I would appreciate some feedback.

January 4, 2008

As some of you know, I started on this almost a year ago. My New Year's Resolution is to get it fully functional. I'm going to post here when I make additions/improvements. I'm working with Becky to get a simple interface for her, so that she can post articles without having to involve me.

As of today, I have revamped the design to a "liquid" format, so that it will be nicely proportioned in any monitor resolution between 800px and 1360px wide. Current browser support is 100% for Firefox and should be 100% for Internet Explorer 7 and Opera by the end of the day. Older versions of Internet Explorer might have problems. I expect to do a stylesheet for IE6 at some point, but it's just not worth the time to do support for Internet Explorer earlier than 6.0 or for Netscape. If anyone using a Mac (OSX or Leopard) has a problem with the site, contact me and I'll fix it.

All of the pages in the top navigation bar should be in good shape and have something at least mildly interesting on them. I added a lot of information on PATH today, including a couple of maps. The "Gallery" section coding is mostly done, but as you can see, it currently just lists all the images I have saved on the server; hopefully, some day, we will have some photos of picnics, the area, etc. But the hard part of coding the feature is done.

So far I'm just paying for the server myself. I think I should be able to make enough income from a sponsorship and/or click-through advertising to make it self-supporting, if there is enough interest in it (i.e. if people actually look at it occasionally).

Webpage Update Feb 15

A lot has been done, but most of it is "behind the scenes". I have built a system that automatically turns text into HTML code, so that an administrator with no programming knowledge can add articles to any page on the website (except the Members' Area). Now the two website administrators (Tony C. and Becky) are able to write articles without any help from me. This function is still fairly simple and needs a lot of work in the areas of security and complexity -- right now it will only make paragraphs and headlines, but it needs to allow admins to insert photographs, lists, links, and subheads.
