Current Traffic Calming Proposals

Below I have reprinted two emails from Christy Harris, who is doing all the work on this, and a copy of the proposal.

I spoke with Adolphus at the City today and here is an update on speed bumps. I will have another, more definitive, update in a few weeks.

Redland and Golfview passed the speeding test criteria, Dellwood did not. This was the 3rd time they tested Dellwood, and even doing the test within 2 years of the last failed test was an exception. But he realizes that if they install speed bumps on Redland and Golfview that it will exacerbate the Dellwood problem. So he is trying to find 2 spots on Dellwood that are less than an 8% grade to propose speed bumps anyway. Even if he finds 2 spots, he has to get an exception from his managers for Dellwood. But at least he is trying.

I will have a petition package from the City in the next few weeks. I will need to obtain signatures from 75% of the neighborhood for the City to agree to install speed bumps. Hopefully, that will be all streets in our neighborhood including Dellwood. Then, we will be on the schedule for speed bump installation!

I am looking for campaigners to go door to door and obtain signatures. Please let me know if you would be willing to take on a street or portion thereof.

I will keep you posted!

I have been promised by the City that they will be placing speed bump testers throughout Collier Hills North within the next two weeks. The current legislation stipulates that 15% of the traffic measured MUST be traveling at least 10 miles over the speed limit to be considered for speed bumps. Even though, as neighbors who work from home can attest, a few bandits fly through here at 50 mph, that is not enough to warrant speed bumps if 15 more of us dutifully oblige the speed limit. There is a tendency when we see the monitors to slow down – don’t do that. Drive your normal [wicked] way so we can get accurate results. I had to beg, bother, harass, and elicit the help of our City Council woman to get them to test our neighborhood again (we technically do not qualify), and in mass. So, residents that like to walk, alone, or with precious children (even the 2-legged kind), THIS IS YOUR CHANCE.

If we do not pass the speed bump standards this time, we may not get another chance for traffic calming during your tenure here in the neighborhood. Even if you don’t think it is a terrible problem now (try walking during rush hours twice a day) – it will only get worse as more density is constructed on Peachtree between Peachtree Battle and 28th St.

See attached .pdf I sent to the City in October.
